Chapter 9: Jungle Fever!
Ace staggered when the dart struck him. He tried to bolt, but he instantly felt woozy There must be some kind of poison on the tip, Ace thought groggily.
Spike leaped from one shoulder to the other just as a second dart flew out of the bush. Ace tried to dodge it, but the projectile struck him in the right arm.
In less than a second, that arm was paralyzed. It dangled uselessly at his side.
THWACK!
Another dart struck the other arm. Now both of Ace s arms flopped limply at his sides.
As the poison from the darts coursed through Ace s system, his only thought was escape. He took off running, his arms flapping at his sides.
As he ran, Ace could hear the sound of footsteps closing in behind him. He gritted his teeth and redoubled his effort. Now he was sprinting through the jungle, trying desperately to dodge rocks and plants despite the weird drug that made his body feel like rubber.
Ace dodged to one side as another dart was fired behind him. This one narrowly missed his back and struck a nearby tree trunk.
The pet detective moved again, but this time the dart found its markâstriking Spike in the back of his little furry neck. The monkey chittered in indignation and draped his long, hairy arms around Aceâs neck.
The drug began its insidious work on Aces sidekick, and Spikes eyelids began to close.
The pet detective pushed himself forward. He continued fleeing for his life, but now he was smacking into low branches and tripping over roots and thick grass.
Finally Ace crashed through a large, flowery bush that stood in his way. Behind the bush was nothing but empty air. Ace saw trouble coming, but couldnât stop.
With a shriek he and Spike ran off the
side of a huge cliff.
They were airborne!
âOh, dear,â Ace muttered. He was surprisingly calm for a man who had just dropped off the end of the earth!
It must be the drug, he thought through a sleepy haze of confusion.
Down and down he and Spike fell. Ace tried to flap his arms like wings. It didnât help. The two of them seemed to drop forever. And just when Ace was wondering when he was going to land, he did.
Hard.
The pet detective dropped on his rump with a crash. Next he began to roll down a hillâhead over heelsâwhacking into trees, crashing through bushes, flipping over rocks. Ace and Spike rolled and rolled and flipped and rolled.'
This must be the longest hillside on the continent, Ace thought as he rolled and flipped and rolled some more.
Finally, though, Ace smacked into a particularly unyielding tree, which served to break his fall. He staggered to his feet wearily, and found himself bruised, dirty, battered, and loopyâbut still very much alive.
Ace looked around him. He and Spike seemed to be alone on the bank of a large, muddy river that ran sluggishly past at his feet.
Spike, who had managed to hang on for the entire trip downhill, looked at Ace.
